A UN Security Council Briefing on the Situation in Afghanistan took place on July 26th, 2019. The meeting was held on the occasion of Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed’s two-day visit to Afghanistan from July 20th to July 21st. She was accompanied to the country by the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo the Head of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, and the Executive Director of the United Nations Population Fund, Natalia Kanem, in a visit in the context of Women, Peace and Security and Development.
In addition to DSG Mohammed, other briefers in the Security Council sesssion included USG DiCarlo and Ms. Jamila Afghani from the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom-Afghanistan who spoke as a representative of civil society (via VTC). Statements by briefers were followed by those of Security Council Members and closed with a statement from the Permanent Mission of Afghanistan.
