First Afghanistan Art Exhibition at the United Nations

Permanent Mission of Afghanistan to the United Nations organized a two –week exhibition of art works and designs by eminent Afghan artist, Professor Amanullah Haiderzad, on 7 April 2008, at the United Nations Headquarters, in New York. The exhibition is aimed at promoting Afghanistan’s rich arts and historic culture at the international level.

H.E. Dr. Zahir Tanin, Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Afghanistan to the United Nations in an opening remarks, inaugurated the art exhibition officially for two weeks. (see statement)

H.E. Srjan Kerim, President of the General Assembly, Mr. Jean Marie Guehenno, Under Secretary – General of the United Nations for Peacekeeping Operations, Mr. Vijay K Nambiar, Under Secretary- General of the United Nations, high- ranking UN Officials, Ambassadors and Permanent Representatives, scholars and diplomats were present at the inauguration ceremony of the exhibition. A large numbers of Afghan Community also attended the exhibition. Moreover, the event was covered by national and international media.

The artistic works of Professor Amanullah Haiderzad, well-known Afghan artist and sculptor include many medals, sculptures, calligraphy, paintings, metallic works and designs, depicting both Islamic and modern art. His art works represent Afghanistan’s rich, historical and cultural identity. It has also international dimension, reflecting the beauty of three distinct traditions; traditional west, avant-garde and traditional Islamic.

Prof. Haiderzad delivered a speech at the ceremony and highlighted role of art in strengthening peace and harmony around the world. He also emphasized on the importance of education and art in bringing peace and democracy in the country.
