Adoption of the Resolution on Enhancement of International Cooperation to Assist Victims of Terrorism

Today the General Assembly adopted by consensus the resolution entitled “Enhancement of International Cooperation to Assist Victims of Terrorism” contained in document A/73/L.88* that was initiated and presented by Afghanistan. The resolution was co-sponsored by almost 90 countries.  

The resolution aims to further strengthen national and international mechanisms to support victims of terrorism and their families and ensure that their human rights and fundamental freedoms are fully respected. Further, this resolution condemns all acts, methods, and practices of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, and expresses the unwavering commitment of the international community to strengthening cooperation to prevent and combat terrorism, address impunity, and pursue accountability for the perpetrators of terrorist acts as well as their supporters.

This resolution also calls upon the Member States to develop their comprehensive victims of terrorism assistance plans in order to address the needs of victims of terrorism and their families and requests the relevant United Nations entities to assist the Member States in developing such plans and aid in their capacity building.
