Press Release for the United Nations General Assembly – 68th Session

The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, H.E. Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, is in New York this week to head Afghanistan’s delegation to the General Debate of the 68th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

The Foreign Minister will address the General Assembly on 27 September 2013 on behalf of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, taking this timely opportunity to renew Afghanistan’s commitment to the work of the United Nations and to update Member States on the successes and challenges facing Afghanistan today.

H.E. Dr. Rassoul attended the opening of the General Debate of the 68th General Assembly on 24 September 2013 to hear world leaders address the Assembly on issues of international importance including the Millennium Development Goals, the crisis in Syria, Security Council reform, and other significant topics.

The Foreign Minister and other members of Afghanistan’s delegation to the 68th General Assembly will represent the country in important High Level Ministerial meetings of key groups in which Afghanistan is involved, including the Group of 77 (G77), the Least Developed Countries (LDCs), the Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDCs), and the Organization for Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

While in New York, H.E. Dr. Rassoul will have an opportunity to renew bilateral ties and discuss relevant issues with a number of  Foreign Ministers. He will also meet with His Excellency Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Over the course of this week, Afghanistan’s delegation will participate in a host of other important events, meetings, and panels.  The country’s participation is an important symbol of Afghanistan’s commitment to the goals of international peace, security and partnership; and its resolve towards these ends.
